Saving $10 Billion with Efficiency

The Wall Street Journal
Opinion Journal

Two weeks ago The Wall Street Journal kicked off a debate on how best to allocate scarce resources to solve the world's problems. Bjorn Lomborg offered a summary of the latest findings from his Copenhagen Consensus project, where he has enlisted some of the world's top economists to address the issue. Now we're offering views on the subject from top political and business leaders. How would you spend $10 billion of American resources (either directly or through regulation) over the next four years to help improve the state of the world?

Sacramento Dreaming Again

The Washington Post
By George F. Will
Thursday, August 7, 2008; A21

SAN FRANCISCO -- California's former and perhaps future governor, Jerry Brown, says it took him 13 minutes to get here from Oakland, where he was mayor for eight years and now lives. He came on BART, the transit system launched by his father, Pat, who was Democratic governor for two terms until beaten by Ronald Reagan in 1966, which ended a political career that began in 1928 when Pat ran unsuccessfully, as a Republican, for the state Assembly.

For 80 years, a Brown has been active in California politics, and if Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who will be 77 in 2010, does not run for governor, Jerry Brown, who is attorney general, probably will, although he says being governor "is an impossible task and anyone will leave discredited." Then why try? Because, he says, he is, in the formulation of the Italian Communist Antonio Gramsci, a pessimist of the intellect but an optimist of the will. He was 36 when he replaced a congenital optimist, Reagan, as governor, and will be twice that age when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger limps back to Los Angeles.

Brown Sues Countrywide Financial

State Attorney General Sues Countrywide
San Francisco Chronicle
James Temple
June 26, 2008

California Attorney General Jerry Brown sued Countrywide Financial Corp. and two of its top executives, alleging they used misleading advertising and unfair business practices to dupe consumers into accepting risky home loans that would eventually force thousands of them into foreclosure.

"Buyers were led down the primrose path, fed extremely complicated and risky mortgage instruments and beguiled into signing up for what turned out to be a disaster," Brown said. "This lawsuit is important because it exposes and seeks remedies for what became a cancer in our entire financial system."

Atty. Gen. Brown Sues Countrywide For Mortgage Deception

Complaint says the nation's largest home-loan company deceived borrowers about the risks of sub-prime mortgages. Countrywide shareholders approve a takeover by Bank of America.

By E. Scott Reckard, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 26, 2008

As Countrywide Financial Corp. shareholders voted Wednesday to ratify the company's sale, ending an era for the mortgage industry, California sued the No. 1 home lender in a broad condemnation of its business practices.

Stumbling emotionally over his words at a special shareholder meeting, Angelo Mozilo, the company's founder, chairman and chief executive, said he saw no future role for stand-alone mortgage lenders such as Countrywide, which thrived during the housing boom and had suffered badly during the bust.

The anti-governator

The Economist

June 12, 2008

Jerry Brown wants to be governor of California again

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER may be less than halfway through his final term as California's governor, but the slow dance to replace him is already under way. One figure looms above all others. Jerry Brown is not, you understand, running a campaign just yet. But he has begun to raise money and muse publicly on the state's future. He begins a sentence with: “Were I to be governor”. As he himself puts it, he would not be behaving any differently if he were in the race.

Mr. Brown has the best surname in California politics. His father, Pat Brown, was the state's chief post-war architect, overseeing an extraordinary boom in freeways, aqueducts and universities. The son has already served two terms as governor, beginning in 1975 and 1979, and two as mayor of Oakland. He was California's secretary of state and is now its attorney-general. He also found time to study Buddhism and Spanish, work with Mother Teresa and run for president three times.

Attorney General Brown Sues EPA For Ignoring Supreme Court Mandate

California Progress Report

California Sues Bush EPA to Comply With Year Old Supreme Court Ruling on Regulating Greenhouse Gases

By Frank D. Russo

A year after the US Supreme Court ruled in Massachusetts v. EPA, a case in which California was a lead plaintiff, that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency must regulate greenhouse gas emissions, and facing defiance, delays, and stonewalling from the Bush administration in complying with that decision, California Attorney General Jerry Brown went to federal court yesterday to force the EPA to release a court-mandated determination that greenhouse gases endanger public health or welfare.

Brown Easily Defeats Opponent to Become AG

(CBS 5 / AP) OAKLAND Jerry Brown won his first election the year man walked on the moon. Tuesday, the man once mocked as "Gov. Moonbeam," took his long and colorful career to a whole new place by winning the race for California attorney general.

Brown, a two-term former governor, three-time presidential candidate and, for the last eight years, mayor of Oakland, easily defeated Republican state Sen. Chuck Poochigian from Fresno.

He saw his crowded resume as good training for attorney general.

"All of these things gave me a very broad range of experience, which enables me to give very sound advice to the governor and legislators," he said.

Jerry Brown Wins Election

Brown is state's new top cop
By Steve Geissinger and Josh Richman, MEDIANEWS SACRAMENTO BUREAU

Article Last Updated:11/08/2006 12:21:21 AM PST

SACRAMENTO -- Democrat Jerry Brown defeated Republican Chuck Poochigian Tuesday for attorney general, despite the GOP's shredding of Brown's record as former governor, Oakland mayor and longtime, all-around political player.

With more than 65 percent of precincts reporting statewide, the nationally known Brown was ahead of the former Fresno state Senator by 55.4 percent to 39.3 percent.

Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown Jr. -- former secretary of state, presidential candidate, state party chairman and radio commentator -- bolstered his reputation as California's most enduring political enigma.

San Jose Mercury News Endorses Brown

Brown is right man for attorney general
Mercury News Editorial

The state attorney general oversees a department of nearly 5,000 employees, including more than 1,000 lawyers, and has a significant impact on everything from criminal law enforcement to consumer and environmental protection.

The breadth of the responsibility convinces us that former governor and current Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown is the better candidate to succeed Bill Lockyer.

At 68, Brown still has a fire in his belly for legal work, and he has the experience to efficiently run an organization of such magnitude. More than state Sen. Chuck Poochigian, Brown has good ideas not just for fighting crime, but also for tackling consumer fraud and the backlog of suits against the state.

Today, the Brown campaign released another TV ad highlighting Jerry Brown's record of achievement and his vision for the office of attorney general.

In the ad Jerry Brown says:

"A lot of people right now are telling you what they’re against – but I want to tell you what I am for – I’m for an attorney general strike force that assists our local police in taking on gangs and the violent criminals. I’m for enforcing, strictly, California's historic Global Warming law. And in the face of possible threats from the US Supreme Court I’m for defending a woman’s right to choose. I’m Jerry Brown and I’d really appreciate your vote for Attorney General."

After nearly 40 years in politics, ranging from two terms as governor to perennial presidential hopeful to mayor of Oakland, Brown, now 68, is seeking to become California's attorney general, another office once occupied by his father, former Gov. Edmund G. Brown.

Richard Nixon's Hometown Newspaper Endorses Jerry Brown

WHITTIER DAILY NEWS

IN California politics, we like our iconoclasts. You need look no further than our current governor to see that successful leaders in the Golden State are not always buttoned-down.

They can live large, think big, admit they've made mistakes and immediately take a change in course.

In their outsized public personalities, in the fact that on the surface they are flashy but at heart they are practical and moderate, former Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov. Schwarzenegger have quite a bit in common.

The current and quite successful mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown is one of the most experienced politicians in California - a community college board member, secretary of state, two-term governor. Some even call him a career politician, but we would differ. When they use the phrase, most people mean fellows who thrive in the air of the (formerly) smoke-filled room, who live for the back-slapping and the baby-kissing and the enriching of themselves and their friends at the public trough.

Inland Valley Daily Bulletin Endorses Brown

Brown for AG

Democrat Jerry Brown, the former governor and current Oakland mayor, is no longer a "Moonbeam," but a smart, seasoned and effective leader quite capable of running the state Attorney General's Office.

His opponent, state Sen. Chuck Poochigian, R-Fresno, emphasizes Brown's liberal and unconventional past in his attack ads, but Brown has moderated his views over the years. He supports Jessica's Law, Proposition 83, for example, and opposed an effort a couple of years ago to weaken the "three strikes" law.

Brown has proven his leadership, his intelligence and his integrity over the years. He has the right tools to be California's attorney general.

FIRST EDITORIAL ON POOCHIGIAN’S FRIVOLOUS LAWSUIT SLAMS POOCHIGIAN

Today the prestigious legal newspaper, Metropolitan News Enterprise, became the first newspaper in California to slam Senator Charles Poochigian for his support of a frivolous lawsuit filed against Brown by his surrogates. Much like the lawsuit filed by the Bush campaign in Florida, Poochigian’s lawsuit seeks to stop the counting of votes in the upcoming election.

The newspaper confirms that the Republican case has no merit saying that “no other construction is possible” except that Brown is completely eligible to serve as Attorney General:

Bus. & Prof. Code §6002 provides: “The members of the State Bar are all persons admitted and licensed to practice law in this State…Sec. 6003 of that code says: “Members of the State Bar are divided into two classes: [¶] (a) Active members. [¶] (b) Inactive members.”

Chuck Poochigian’s fringe voting record is exposed yet again in the world premiere of another YouTube documentary entitled “Poochigian Scoffs at Gun Laws.” Last month, a similar film “Poochigian’s Toxic Legacy” examined Poochigian’s abysmal environment record.

LA Daily News Endorses Brown

Brown for attorney general

AS a former governor and the current mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown is one of the most experienced politicians in California. And yet he's no career politician in the conventional sense of the word. He's straightforward, honest, sensible, down-to-earth.

Brown's opponent in the race for attorney general, state Sen. Chuck Poochigian, R-Fresno, is a decent man who has run an indecent campaign, rife with attack ads blasting Brown for his liberal past. But it's a cheap shot.

For starters, Brown has moved to the middle over the course of his political career. In 2004, for example, he successfully fought Proposition 66, which would have watered down the state's "three strikes, you're out" law. Today he is a prominent supporter of Proposition 83, Jessica's Law.

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE ENDORSES BROWN

Capable mavericks

Brown for AG; McClintock for lt. governor

Californians have benefited greatly from having a smart, able maverick as a governor the last three years. We think we would also benefit from having two more such mavericks – of wildly different varieties – as attorney general and lieutenant governor.

Twenty years ago, it would have been hard to imagine this editorial page endorsing Democrat Jerry Brown for statewide office. His two terms as governor, 1975-1983, were more notable for quirkiness and liberalism than substantive achievements. But if all one were to know of Brown was his record the past eight years as Oakland mayor, he would seem the model of a pragmatic, capable centrist – someone who sees economic revitalization, not government programs, as key to his city's quality of life; an advocate of charter schools and more aggressive policing; and a frequent foe of public employee unions.

Poochigian Rejects Sound Science and Gets a ZERO on the Environment

The Brown campaign today released a TV ad exposing Poochigian's extreme, anti-environment record.

Poochigian consistently sided with polluters and opposed tougher standards for air and water quality. Poochigian rejected sound science and opposed the historic, bipartisan agreement to reduce global warming. Recently, Poochigian went on record calling Governor Schwarzenegger's signature global warming initiative "Pollyannaish."

Jerry Brown: Candidate of Pragamtism, Moderation, Experience

The Recorder
By Cheryl Miller
October 12, 2006

"The former governor and current mayor is a lock to replace Bill Lockyer as California's attorney general."

SACRAMENTO — Moonbeams do not shine on Jerry Brown's campaign trail.

In fact, the ex-governor, who polls say is very likely California's next attorney general, has a very down-to-earth message for voters: Forget the over-hyped caricatures from the 1970s and '80s. Meet the candidate of pragmatism, of moderation, of experience.

"I'm going to take a very practical, common-sense approach as attorney general," Brown said in a recent interview. "I'm someone who's acutely aware of the fact that we as a state have added 25,000 laws since I was governor. I think we ought to give people some space to live their lives."

Monterey County Weekly Endorses Brown

While his former job as governor will be useful in helping Brown navigate Sacramento, his more recent gig as mayor of Oakland may be more useful. Brown will no doubt use the AG’s office to defend California citizens and the environment from powerful lawbreakers—and he can be expected to act both aggressively and judiciously. But he says he plans to also focus on fighting urban crime. He says he’ll do this by beefing up training for police officers, and by asking the state crime labs to help local labs. Small stuff—but it has earned him endorsements from many in law enforcement.

Brown will likely never live down his reputation as a (ahem) visionary, but many who have worked with him over the decades since he earned his “Moonbeam” moniker attest to his clear-headed approach. His opponent, Chuck Poochigian, is more ideologically driven (and in the opposite direction).

Contra Costa Times Endorses Brown

Editorials Atty. general: Brown

AFTER NEARLY A QUARTER-century absence, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown is seeking to get back to Sacramento, this time as California's attorney general. Opposing him is termed-out state Sen. Charles Poochigian.

There is a huge gap separating Brown's and Poochigian's political careers and views on a number of issues. This has led to a feisty campaign in which each candidate has attacked the other's trustworthiness and ability to do the job.

But what is most important for voters to consider is who has the better background and ability to perform as the state's attorney general. We believe it is Jerry Brown.

San Francisco Chronicle Endorses Jerry Brown

Why Jerry Brown is right for AG

PUTTING CRIMINALS in jail isn't the only job of California's attorney general. The state's top prosecutor is also its head lawyer, watching over consumer rights, pollution laws and labor violations.

These varied duties require broad knowledge and administrative skill, not just a tough-cop record on crime-and-punishment issues. The two major candidates for this important office -- Republican Chuck Poochigian and Democrat Jerry Brown -- are both politicians with seasoned records.

But only Brown advocates using the powers of the office on full range of issues that will protect California. That's why he deserves election as attorney general.

Poochigian Calls Schwarzenegger’s Signature Global Warming Initiative “Pollyannaish”

San Francisco — During the first debate in the 2006 race for state attorney general, State Senator Charles Poochigian attacked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s signature Global Warming Initiative as “Pollyannaish.” Just last week, Schwarzenegger signed the Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent in the next fifteen years.

During the debate, Poochigian was at a loss to explain his opposition to this common sense environmental measure supported by Schwarzenegger. In complete defensive mode, Poochigian finally sputtered that he opposed Schwarzenegger’s measure because he found it “Pollyannaish.”

Sacramento Bee: Brown is the better choice for attorney general

Candidates for California Attorney General invariably stress their law enforcement credentials, striving mightily to convince voters they are suited to be the state's "top cop."

But forget all the tough-guy rhetoric. The attorney general isn't a cop. Mostly, he operates primarily as the managing attorney of a very large law firm. His clients are state agencies -- Corrections, Social Services, Water Resources, etc. The AG's job is to defend the agencies against the thousands of lawsuits filed against them every year and to sue people and companies that break state law.

Of the two major candidates for attorney general -- Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Chuck Poochigian -- Brown has a better understanding of that essential role. The former governor and current mayor of Oakland stresses his superior judgment when it comes to deciding "when to sue, who to sue, when to settle and for how much." That is the judgment the people of California need from their attorney general. For that reason, Brown has our endorsement.

San Francisco Chronicle Says ‘More Bad News’ for Poochigian

Financial reports showing Jerry Brown with $ 5.0 million dollars to Poochigian’s shockingly meager $ 1.6 were called “more bad news for state Sen. Chuck Poochigian,” in today’s San Francisco Chronicle:

The Chronicle reported that:

“The financial reports were more bad news for state Sen. Chuck Poochigian, the GOP candidate for attorney general. Not only has he been running well behind Oakland Mayor -- and former California Governor -- Jerry Brown in the polls, but he trails his Democratic foe in the fundraising battle by better than 3-to-1. Brown has $5 million in the bank, compared to $1.6 million for Poochigian.”

Brown's Cops Crack Brinks Case

Oakland Police Solve Armored Truck Murder, Robbery

Jeffrey Schaub
Reporting

(CBS 5) OAKLAND One week after the Brinks truck robbery and the murder of Brinks guard Anthony Qunitero, Oakland Police and the FBI say they have solved the case. Late Thursday investigators in San Diego arrested 24-year-old William Campbell, the so called "second suspect."

"We believe that Mr. Campbell was the suspect who shot Anthony Quintero during the armed robbery and homicide last Friday," said Deputy Chief Howard Jordan.

Police say Campbell was a friend of 28 year old Clifton Wherry, who is seen in a surveillance video taken the very morning of the Brinks Heist. Police say both men conspired to pull off the robbery. In effect, it was an inside job, because Wherry, also a Brings guard, was riding along side Anthony Quintero in the armored truck that day.

Brown Posts 'Swamping' $5.0 Million to Poochigian’s Meager $1.6

In a crushing blow to the Poochigian campaign, Jerry Brown goes into the final weeks with $ 5.0 million dollars to Poochigian’s $ 1.6 million. Today, The Los Angeles Times reports that “campaign finance reports filed Thursday show Democratic Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown is swamping state Sen. Chuck Poochigian (R-Fresno) in the attorney general's campaign.”

Ace Smith, campaign consultant to the Brown for Attorney General campaign said: "We now know why the Poochigian campaign is acting so desperate. They have spent their money on attack ads and are still stuck at 30% in the polls. Clearly, Poochigian’s trash talking torsos are not turning heads."

San Francisco Bay Guardian Endorses Brown

Brown is one of the most interesting and unpredictable politicians in the country. As a candidate for AG, he's talking about protecting a woman's right to choose and defending stem-cell research, aggressively taking on environmental crimes (something he's always been good on) — and enforcing the death penalty, even though he doesn't believe in it. He reluctantly came around to supporting same-sex marriage during the primary. He hasn't said a word about the Bay Area newspaper merger.

But there really isn't much choice here: Brown's opponent, state senator Charles Poochigian of Fresno, is antichoice and progun, opposed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's global warming proposals, and is one of the most right-wing candidates on the November ballot.

Brown for top cop

Jerry Brown's record as mayor of Oakland proves that "law-and-order liberal" is not an oxymoron. For his innovative approach to crime-fighting in one of California's toughest cities, we support Brown as California's next attorney general.

Brown's eight-year tenure as Oakland's mayor instilled in him an appreciation for the challenges facing law enforcement. Brown pushed for more than 50 new officers, imposed curfews on probationers and adopted high-tech police gear, from satellite monitoring devices for parolees to audio receivers that pinpoint the location of gunshots.

Forget everything else -- he's an experienced public servant with an independent mind, made pragmatic by running Oakland.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF BAD reasons to vote for Jerry Brown for attorney general. Don't do it out of nostalgia. Brown was governor in the 1970s, but he can't return us to that less crowded state of yesteryear, with its newer highways and more mellow vibe. Don't do it out of a sense of mischief. Having an ex-governor as attorney general could create some interesting political dynamics in Sacramento, but Brown will have his hands full with his own job if he gets elected. Don't do it out of partisanship. Democrats are often as exasperated as they are energized by Brown's iconoclastic approach to politics. And don't do it out of sheer curiosity, to witness another chapter of the state's most fascinating story of personal reinvention and political longevity.

Statement by Kathy Kneer

President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC)

Despite the recent comments made by Charles Poochigian about his "commitment" to support the privacy provision of the State Constitution, his voting record and prior comments he has made to anti-choice groups leaves us with zero confidence that he will ever defend a woman's right to choose.

Charles Poochigian's record speaks for itself. He voted against the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2002. He voted NO to teaching comprehensive sex education in our schools. He even failed to support grants for teen pregnancy prevention programs. That's too extreme for California.

Letter from a Republican: Why I am Voting for Jerry Brown for Attorney General

Letter from a Republican: Why I am Voting for Jerry Brown for Attorney General

By Becky Mocciaro

I am a registered Republican female living in the shadow of Eli Broad's house in Mandeville Canyon, and on Gov. Schwarzenegger's route home, on the westside of Los Angeles. Check my registration if you don’t believe that someone can live in Brentwood for 24 years and not be a Democrat.

I’m voting for Jerry Brown for Attorney General, for many reasons, not the least of which is that his opponent apparently has hired idiots to run his campaign. Why should I be surprised? Other than my neighbor Arnold, Republicans in California have political tin ears and a collective political death wish.

Poochigian: A Dismal Record on Gun Legislation

EXPOSE OF A DISMAL RECORD OF SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION’S POSITION ON GUN LEGISLATION CALLED UNETHICAL” BY BROWN’S AG OPPONENT

By Bill Cavala
A veteran of over 30 years in Sacramento

Republican candidate for Attorney General Poochigian is crying foul over a Jerry Brown ad that features an Oakland Police Department official. As the Republicans know, the ad meets all legal guidelines. But, they complain, it avoids breaking those guidelines in an “unethical manner”.

Remarkably, the Oakland Tribune bit and made that the lead in their story on the ad.

But the point of the ad was the fact that Poochigian opposed law enforcement and remained the lap dog of the NRA as a Member of the Legislature.

Why Jerry Brown Has So Much Law Enforcement Support for Attorney General

Latest Remark by Republican Opponent Poochigian On Cop Killing Rifles Draws Calls for Retraction

By Frank D. Russo

If you ever wonder why Jerry Brown, the Democratic candidate for Attorney General, has the lion’s share of law enforcement endorsements, take a look at Exhibit A: The comments his opponent made during a Sacramento Bee Editorial Board Meeting yesterday about his vote against outlawing 50 caliber bullet assault rifles.

One of the biggest bullets in the world, the 50 caliber rounds were designed to pierce armor from hundreds of yards away. Numerous demonstrations by the U.S. Marines and various police departments throughout the nation have shown this weapon to be devastatingly effective. Dozens of public policy groups and media reports have observed that .50 Caliber BMG Sniper Rifles could be lethal to innocent bystanders, police officers and even have terrorist application.

Blogtrack: Brown wins hands down when it comes to experience, website and 10-K

Jerry Brown, former mayor of Oakland and Governor of California, is now slowly but surely climbing back up the ladder of California politics, and is currently running for Attorney General. Despite some recent negative coverage by the LA Times on his record, I think Brown has to be heavily favored over State Senator Chuck Poochigian.

First, Brown wins hands down when it comes to statewide experience. C’mon–the guy was our governor. In addition, what people may NOT remember is that Jerry has already served once as our state’s attorney general–under Governor Earl Warren. Second, Jerry Brown’s website is much, much cooler than Poochigian’s site (Pooch4AG..something tells me he shouldn’t have chose this as his site name, but who knows?)

POOCHIGIAN BATTLES 'EXTREME' LABEL

Responding to negative television ads portraying him as an attorney general candidate opposed to gun control and abortion rights, Republican state Sen. Chuck Poochigian on Monday said it was his opponent, Democratic Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, who is "extreme."

Poochigian cited Brown's "unbelievable effort to undermine the death penalty" when, as governor in the late 1970s, Brown vetoed a bill reinstating the death penalty. The Legislature overrode his veto.

"I'm absolutely convinced that the more people know Jerry Brown -- the truth -- and the more they know about me, the higher my standing," Poochigian said in a breakfast meeting with The Bee Capitol Bureau. "He is going to avoid (discussing) bizarre and extreme positions he's taken in public life."

Let’s just take a brief look at one of these areas: Enforcement of environmental laws to see where the Poochigian, the Republican nominee stands. As a term limited out state Senator, he has a long history which also includes his years in the state Assembly.

The California League of Conservation Voters keeps a scorecard of environmental votes in the legislature. Over his terms in the Assembly and Senate, Poochigian rated: 13% in 1995, 4% in 1996, 9 % in 1997, 0 % in 1998, 0% in 1999, 7% in 2000, 0 % in 2001, 0% in 2002, 0 % in 2003, 6% in 2004, and 9% in 2005. This is a legislative career average of 4.3 %.

Campaign Ads Show Poochigian Extremism

Brown Airing Attack Spots
The Democrat's ads paint GOP attorney general rival Poochigian as an extremist.
By Eric Bailey, Times Staff Writer
September 15, 2006

In an early move, Democrat Jerry Brown launched a television advertising campaign Thursday in the race for California attorney general, using a trio of commercials to attack Republican foe Chuck Poochigian as too extreme for the state.

The ads, part of a weeklong $300,000 buy on cable TV systems throughout the state, according to Brown's campaign, comes as the California GOP airs a feisty radio ad that ridicules Brown as "flaky" and too liberal to serve as the state's top law officer.

Brown Campaign Releases TV Ads

Brown Campaign Releases Ads Highlighting Brown's California Police Chiefs Endorsement and Warning Voters About Poochigian's Extremist Record

The Jerry Brown for Attorney General campaign today released four campaign television spots highlighting the endorsement of Brown by the California Police Chiefs and warning voters about Charles Poochigian’s record of being too extreme for California.

The first ad stars the President of the California Police Chief’s Assocition, Steve Krull who talks about why his organization endorsed Brown over Poochigian and points out Brown’s record of being tough on crime. It also highlights Jerry Brown’s overwhelming support from dozens of police associations, deputy sheriffs, police chiefs, and individual law enforcement officers across California. Steve Krull, President of the California Police Chiefs Association says, “When the California Police Chiefs decided to endorse a candidate for Attorney General, we interviewed both candidates –We looked at their experience and their records in Law Enforcement. And Jerry Brown is clearly the better choice for California.”

Planned Parenthood Calls On Poochigian to Start Telling the Truth About His Record on a Woman’s Right to Choose

Planned Parenthood today called on Poochigian to own up to his long-held anti-choice position. Kathy Kneer, President of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California said: “Poochigian needs to acknowledge his extreme anti-choice position. He has received campaign contributions from the California Pro-Life Council and he has supported their positions 100%. Poochigian has been a consistent opponent of a woman's right to choose and would ban all abortion tomorrow if he could. He has repeatedly and consistently voted against pro-choice bills including the Reproductive Privacy Act and bills supporting Roe v. Wade. That's really out of the mainstream."

AGAINST THE GRAIN, OAKLAND MILITARY INSTITUTE FORGES AHEAD

Anti-war City Council candidate up in arms over Oakland Military Institute

San Francisco Chronicle
Chip Johnson
Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Cody Kopowski hopes the Oakland Military Institute, a public charter school that Mayor Jerry Brown opened six years ago, will be his ticket to an appointment to the Army's U.S. Military Academy.

"I went to OMI because I want to go to West Point," said Kopowski, a 17-year-old senior. "That was my entire goal, and I figured going to a military high school was a good way to get into a military college."

He and classmate Mashon Wilson, also 17, spent a week in June at a leadership conference at West Point in New York state, where they were oriented to the school, the curriculum, the training regimen -- and got to fire a field artillery weapon.

Fresno Senator in Uphill Struggle--Poochigian Trails Jerry Brown in Polls, Funds

By E.J. Schultz / Bee Capitol Bureau

SACRAMENTO — Down in the polls and behind in the money race, Fresno's Chuck Poochigian will have to make a come-from-behind charge if he is to upset Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown in the contest for state attorney general.

Helped by his high name recognition, Brown, a former governor and presidential candidate, has a 21-point lead over Poochigian, a Republican state senator, according to a Field Poll released last week.

The poll shows voters favoring Brown, a Democrat, 54% to 33%. Four out of five likely voters had an opinion on him. Just 16% of voters have an opinion on Poochigian.

Planned Parenthood Says Chuck Poochigian Is “Out of touch” and “Extreme”

Today, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) joined the broad coalition of Californians who endorse Jerry Brown for Attorney General. The group also criticized Brown’s opponent, State Senator Chuck Poochigian, for his extreme views on this issue – noting that Poochigian even wants to outlaw abortion for women who are the victims of rape or incest.

Kathy Kneer, PPAC President said: “We support Jerry Brown for Attorney General because he will defend a woman’s right to choose in the face of challenges from extremists who are determined to overturn Roe v. Wade and return to the days of back alley abortions.”

Brown Way Ahead in Polls

SACRAMENTO - A Field Poll released today shows that Democratic candidates are leading in each of the half-dozen ``down ballot'' races in November, with Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown holding a substantial lead in his bid for attorney general.

Even incumbent Republican Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, from Santa Cruz, trails -- though his battle with state Sen. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, is the closest contest.

The poll, taken July 10-23, reveals that as many as 25 percent of the voters are undecided in some races and that many of the candidates are not well-known.

But two that are -- Brown and current Attorney General Bill Lockyer -- have the biggest leads.

Concerned Oakland Citizen Supports Brown and Rebukes Poochigian's Negative Attacks

Subject: State Attorney General Campaing

Senator Poochigian,

I was a strong supporter of your past worker’s comp reform. You helped improve much for the citizens and business of California. However; I take offence to the negative method in which you are campaigning against Mayor Jerry Brown for the State Attorney General position. You’ve destroyed the image I once had of you.

I could never vote for a candidate that doesn’t first try to win the public support with a campaign designed to educate the public about his or her’s qualifications and goals. It’s appalling to see the method you’ve taken. Other than your efforts towards reforming workers comp, my only other exposure to you has been your commercials blasting Mayor Brown.

Brown Calls on Poochigian to Apologize for False Accusations Aimed at Fresno Cops

Brown Calls on Poochigian to Apologize for False Accusations Aimed at Fresno Cops

Fresno—State Senator Charles Poochigian (Fresno) bitterly attacked the Fresno Police Officers Association because they recently endorsed Jerry Brown. Wednesday, on KMJ 580 Radio, Poochigian falsely accused Fresno Police Officers of deception and “backtracking” during an interview with talk show host Ray Appleton.

Listen to the interview: here

Sen. Poochigian: “It’s just unfortunate. I, you know, I, this is speculation on my part, of course, all I can tell is that some of the leadership must be reeling over the attention that you’ve given them and the Fresno Bee’s given them and others.

Brown Helps Native American Heritage Commission Celebrate 30 Years

Former California Governor Edmund Gerald "Jerry" Brown Jr. made a surprise visit to Tuolumne on Saturday for the 30th anniversary celebration of the Native American Heritage Commission, an agency he signed into law 30 years ago.

The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk hosted the event, which also drew about 500 American Indians representing more than 40 tribes throughout California.

The commission's mission is to protect American Indian burial sites and other sites sacred to American Indians from vandalism and inadvertent destruction.

The law that created the commission also gives tribes the power to monitor development projects and demand that sacred sites are identified and protected.

Brown Easily Defeats Delgadillo
Oakland mayor is aided by name recognition in the Democratic race for attorney general.
By Eric Bailey, Times Staff Writer
June 7, 2006

OAKLAND — Jerry Brown, California's iconoclastic ex-governor turned big city mayor, won the Democratic attorney general primary Tuesday in a bid to return to statewide office after a two-decade absence.

Brown, 68, held a commanding lead against Rocky Delgadillo, the Los Angeles city attorney who ran a spirited but uphill fight against a foe who remains a household name in California political circles.

"I feel confident — yes I do!" declared Brown, Oakland's mayor, as he disembarked from a black Lincoln Continental at his campaign celebration with his wife, Anne, and the family pet, a chubby black Labrador named Dharma.

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) -

Having spent two terms as California governor, run for president three times and dated at least one rock star, Jerry Brown has long served as an eclectic voice in American politics.

After his Democratic primary win on Tuesday, Brown, who is ending his second term as mayor of Oakland, campaigned on Wednesday across California to conquer yet another political office, this time the job of state attorney general.

In the day after a landslide win in the primary election, Brown, 68, made campaign stops in Los Angeles, Fresno, San Diego, Sacramento and Bakersfield.

Oakland Rated Top Sustainable City

Oakland is moving up on the ladder of sustainability, which among other things means more people are recycling their trash and taking the bus or walking to work instead of driving.

Of the country's 50 largest cities, Oakland ranked sixth in a sustainability survey that looked at commuting, air and water quality, recycling, and green buildings. Last year, Oakland placed ninth.

The second annual survey, to be released today, was conducted by SustainLane.com, a San Francisco-based online resource for sustainable living.

A sustainable city is a place that has a strong local economy, is walkable, makes use of renewable energy and has farmers markets, among other features, according to the survey.

Oakland Tribune Endorses Jerry Brown

***

Experience alone makes Brown the clear choice in this race. The two-time governor would bring an unmatched background to the job, having also served a term as secretary of state, a stint as the state's Democratic Party chairman and the last two terms as Oakland's mayor.

Once known as Governor Moonbeam, Brown has shown himself to be an adroit pragmatist who has evolved into Mayor Mainstream. More than his recent mayoral predecessors, Brown has Oakland on the rise, poised at last for an economic revitalization that many thought would never come.

If Delgadillo had his way and Oakland's current homicide rate were the only measure in this race, Brown could find himself on the defensive. But as he points out, even with the recent spike,

Candor in law enforcement
Brown for Democratic nomination for attorney general

It's out of the ordinary, to say the least, for a former governor to re-enter state politics and run for attorney general. But then there's nothing ordinary about Jerry Brown, which is a big part of why he's the best choice in next month's Democratic primary.

Brown's political career has most recently taken him to Oakland, where he has won wide praise for his tenure as mayor. Under Brown's leadership, crime has dropped, the downtown has been revitalized and the city has been transformed from scary to hip...

TIME MAGAZINE PROFILES JERRY BROWN

Jerry Brown Still Wants Your Vote

By MICHAEL DUFFY / OAKLAND
Sunday, May 21, 2006

California's Jerry Brown, age 68 and ageless, is running for statewide office this year, 36 years after he did it the first time, and the question you have to ask is, Why doesn't he give it up?...

But asking Edmund Brown Jr. to give up politics is a little like asking the Rolling Stones to quit rock 'n' roll. It's just what they do. Brown is a rock star himself. The son of a storied California Governor and a veteran of nearly four years in a Jesuit seminary, he ran for California secretary of state at 32, was on the cover of TIME by 36, served two terms as California Governor, ran unsuccessfully for the Senate once and for President three times, moved to Japan, studied Buddhism, worked with Mother Teresa and was a radio talk-show host--all before diving into the unforgiving cauldron of Oakland politics a decade ago. He is at an age when overachievers in nearly every other profession would start to pack it in. But no man who wakes up at 5 a.m. to read and has been known to keep an eye on Fox News after midnight should be considered a candidate for retirement anytime soon.

Brown Runs For Top Cop Post

By Jim Herron Zamora
San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer

...Brown grew up in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood and after graduating from St. Ignatius, he attended University of Santa Clara, then Jesuit seminary before leaving the seminary and getting a bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley and a law degree from Yale.

Despite being the son of a governor, Brown was elected secretary of state in 1970 as an outsider preaching the mantra of reform and change. In that office, he sued powerful oil companies for illegal campaign donations and argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1974, Brown was elected governor, succeeding Ronald Reagan.

LOS ANGELES TIMES ENDORSES JERRY BROWN

"Brown is easily the better candidate" for Attorney General.

...Brown offers more than an entertaining life story. His career has given him perspective, and his record shows a rare combination of innovation and pragmatism. In Oakland, he has instituted curfews for felons and reduced the crime rate. He pushed for political reform even before Watergate and has stuck with it. He was an early crusader for the environment and gay rights, and he still leads on those issues. He has shown a refreshing disregard for the political establishment, even as he has become part of it...

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE ENDORSES JERRY BROWN FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

Brown's extensive record of support for abortion rights is clear. So is the choice in this primary: Jerry Brown should be the Democrats' nominee for attorney general.

OAKLAND Mayor Jerry Brown has just about done it all in public life: community college board, secretary of state, two-term governor of California, Democratic Party state chairman, three-time candidate for president, one-time candidate for U.S. Senate and, finally, mayor of the Bay Area's third-largest city.

So, when Brown announced his candidacy for state attorney general, it begged the question -- was this merely the most convenient available office for a perpetual candidate, or was there a plausible argument for putting Brown in charge of what amounts to the state's law firm?

By John Balzar, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
April 22, 2006

Interesting. Entertaining. Engaging. Charming. Fluent. Nimble. Formidable.

Our subject here is Jerry Brown.

And who uses words like this to describe him? Well, as it happens, it's not only his friends. California's reigning Democratic electoral war horse has cranked up his 11th campaign for public office, and once again he's the talk of politics.

In this case, these exact words are from the mouth of a sworn foe — a longtime Republican activist who spoke anonymously for the sake of candor but who wants nothing more than to see Brown permanently retired.

JERRY BROWN HAS COMMANDING 41 POINT LEAD IN PRIMARY FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL

Jerry Brown: The career anti-politician returns

If there's anything on which Jerry Brown and his critics can probably agree it's that he's one of a kind.

A serial born-again politician who's professed deep new insights with every campaign, he claims again to be a different kind of candidate as he runs for attorney general. Although it's always the same Brown, he's still the most interesting political act in town.

Take his appearance last month before a friendly audience of Democrats at Boalt Hall, the Berkeley law school. After seven years as Oakland's mayor, he said, he's learned about the practical realities of governing.
Being mayor is "hands-on"; the governor's job, which he held from 1974 to 1982, imposed "more abstract" responsibilities. He signed 9,000 laws in Sacramento, many of which he now regretted.

San Francisco Business Times Honors Jerry Brown as Dealmaker of the Year

For making his vision of robust housing growth a reality, Brown is being honored as Deal Maker of the Year by the San Francisco Business Times.

"I've seen a lot of things come across, and it was the single most successful organized effort to bring housing downtown," said Bruce Kern, executive director of regional development group EDAB. "Without the plan and vision and strong push by the mayor and council, the developers would have come, but (Oakland would) not have achieved the result we are seeing."
