- Pro-Choice Funding for Low Income Women:
In 1977, the Hyde Amendment cut off federal funding which previously allowed Medicaid recipients to receive safe and legal abortions. Although the Supreme Court ruled that states were not required to provide abortions under Medicaid, Jerry Brown continued to fund the program. Without Brown's action, 100,000 low-income women a year receiving abortions under the program would have been left to fend for themselves. - Family Planning Services:
Brown signed a bill to require county health clinics to provide physicians and surgeons with a list of family planning and birth control clinics. - Fought Proposition 73:
Last year, Brown fought the passage of Proposition 73, a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the right of women to choose.
