    Protecting Seniors

  • Eliminated Mandatory Retirement: Brown eliminated mandatory retirement ages for employees in the public sector. Brown also required private retirement plans to offer an option for employees to continue work after the established retirement age.

  • Expanded Senior Citizens Property Tax Assistance: Brown expanded the relief given to senior citizens under the Property Tax Assistance Law.

  • Established Elderly Housing Rehabilitation Program: Brown established the Elderly Housing Rehabilitation Program to allow deferred payment loans for housing to be occupied by low income elderly.

  • Created Senior Citizen Shared Housing Program: Brown established the Senior Citizens Shared Housing Program which enabled seniors to find shared housing opportunities with other seniors.

  • Enacted the Older Californians Act: Brown enacted the Older Californians Act which established the California Interdepartmental Committee on Aging linking all state agencies and departments in a single network to serve as the principle advocate in the state on behalf of older individuals.

  • Extended the Senior Nutrition Program: Brown extended the Senior Nutrition and Volunteer Program. The bill appropriated funds to continue a program to reimburse seniors who volunteer in job care centers for their transportation and meals.

  • Established Food Donation Program: Brown established a program to allow organizations to gather produce from commercial harvests for distribution to seniors who would otherwise do without.

  • Expanded Senior Companion Program: Brown established the Senior Companion Program to provide meaningful volunteer and community service opportunities to seniors. He also signed a bill to expand the successful program.

  • Education for Seniors: Brown permitted seniors to attend state-college classes without paying fees.

  • Established the Senior Service Project: Brown established the Multipurpose Senior Service Project which assisted the frail elderly to help them remain independent.

  • Improved Advocacy for Elderly: Brown allowed long-term care ombudsmen to access residential facilities that provide services to elderly.
