    Reforming Our Schools

  • Charter Schools: Under Jerry Brown, Oakland has taken the lead in establishing charter schools. In 1998 there were only three charter schools operating in Oakland—today there are 26. Brown personally founded the Oakland School for the Arts and the Oakland Military Institute. Both schools serve students from the 6th grade through the 12th grade and are among the best performing schools in Oakland.

  • Expanding Library Services: As Governor, Brown appropriated millions of dollars for expansion of state library services.

  • Setting High Standards: Brown also required applicants for teaching credentials to pass proficiency examinations.

  • Supporting Special Education: Brown repeatedly signed bills to fund California’s special education programs.

  • College Opportunity Grants: Brown increased funding for the college opportunity grant program by 50 percent.

  • Founded Oakland School for the Arts: The Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) is devoted to intensive pre-professional training in the arts within a college-preparatory curriculum. OSA is a public school -- no tuition is charged. The school is a model of integration.

  • Founded Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy: The Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy (OMI) is the result of a unique collaboration between Mayor Jerry Brown and the California National Guard. OMI, now five years old, is a public charter school - no tuition is charged. In the most recent state tests, OMI students jumped 46 points.
