Planned Parenthood Says Chuck Poochigian Is “Out of touch” and “Extreme”

Today, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) joined the broad coalition of Californians who endorse Jerry Brown for Attorney General. The group also criticized Brown’s opponent, State Senator Chuck Poochigian, for his extreme views on this issue – noting that Poochigian even wants to outlaw abortion for women who are the victims of rape or incest.

Kathy Kneer, PPAC President said: “We support Jerry Brown for Attorney General because he will defend a woman’s right to choose in the face of challenges from extremists who are determined to overturn Roe v. Wade and return to the days of back alley abortions.”

“Unfortunately, it is clear that State Senator Chuck Poochigian cannot be trusted to uphold California law, including the Reproductive Privacy Act. Poochigian is so extreme that he wants to outlaw abortion for women who are the victims of rape or incest. He is truly out of touch with California voters. This is a pro-choice state where Californians consistently and overwhelmingly support upholding Roe v. Wade.

Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown said: “I am proud to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood. As Attorney General I will defend a woman’s right to choose and I will ensure that stem-cell research is not jeopardized by misguided zealots attempting to substitute fundamentalist theology for sound science.”

Poochigian’s position on a woman’s right to choose is far out-of-the-mainstream of California voters. He supports 100% of the Pro-Life Council positions including outlawing abortion even in the case of incest or rape.

Poochigian received campaign contributions from the California Pro-Life Council, and was thanked by the California Right to Life PAC, Crusade for Life and the Christian Coalition for his voting record in the California Legislature.

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) is the state public policy office representing California’s incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates. Through advocacy and electoral action, PPAC promotes sound public policy in areas of reproductive health care, family planning and comprehensive sex education.
