"Zero confidence" in Poochigian

Statement by Kathy Kneer

President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC)

Despite the recent comments made by Charles Poochigian about his "commitment" to support the privacy provision of the State Constitution, his voting record and prior comments he has made to anti-choice groups leaves us with zero confidence that he will ever defend a woman's right to choose.

Charles Poochigian's record speaks for itself. He voted against the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2002. He voted NO to teaching comprehensive sex education in our schools. He even failed to support grants for teen pregnancy prevention programs. That's too extreme for California.

We have always counted on the attorney general to defend abortion rights in a pro-choice state like California. Most recently Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed a lawsuit against the federal Weldon Amendment, a Bush spending restriction denying billions of dollars in federal funds to California if it enforces women's constitutional right to emergency abortion care. The attorney general also has taken the lead to protect California women against anti-choice efforts aimed at reducing access to abortion and other reproductive health services.

That's why Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California endorsed Jerry Brown's candidacy this year. We know we can count on Jerry Brown to be proactive in his defense of a woman's right to choose and other reproductive health care rights.
